Let's celebrate Grandparents Day (and Week!!)

Grandparents Day is celebrated in the United States each year on the second Sunday in September. This year, we will celebrate it on September 8th.
National Grandparents Day began due to the innovative work of two committed and passionate
pioneers: Jacob Reingold and Marian McQuade. During the 1961 White House Conference on Aging,
Jacob Reingold of the Hebrew Home at Riverdale in New York was inspired by a speech concerning
the “new image of the aged” and focused on recognizing the role of millions of older Americans who
are grandparents. The first official celebration was in 1963.
An organization called Generations United wants everyone to Do Something Grand on Grandparents Day, Sept. 8th, during the week following (which they call "Grandparents Week"), and all year long!
Generations United has created a Take Action guide that encourages grandparents to celebrate by sharing their wisdom, youth and children to connect and serve their grandparents and older adults in the community, and by planning intergenerational activism projects.  For more information, click here

Palliative Care A Great Success

Thank you for everyone who made it to the Elks Lodge last night to learn about Palliative Care. There was a great turn out and we learned a lot. Please stay on the lookout for more events from Elders Village. We at AEC really believe in the work they are doing and are most certainly going to sponsor more learning events.

Congratulations to Maggie & Andy

On August 10, 2013, two of our residents, Maggie Walker and Andy Stone exchanged commitments for life in a ceremony at the Waters Edge Lodge. The living room was filled with residents and family members  to witness this wonderful and touching event. Maggie and Andy didn't want the formality of another marriage, but wanted to say how much they love each other to the world. After a brief ceremony (which gave David Ruttan an opportunity to wear one of his favorite Hawaiian shirts!), all guests adjourned to the dining room for appetizers, cake, and a toast to the happy couple. A special hula was performed to help celebrate the occasion. We would like to add another congratulations and wish the newly committed couple many more happy years together!
